Frequency of rheumatoid arthritis in Central Hospital of IPS. Preliminary analysis
Abstract
Introduction and objectives: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a systemic disease that mainly affects the young and working population. Previous studies have cited a worldwide prevalence of 0.5-1 %, but to our knowledge there are no RA prevalence studies in the Paraguayan population. The objective of this study is to describe the frequency of this disease in the Rheumatology service of Hospital Central de Instituto de Prevision Social (IPS). Methods: This is a retrospective, observational study. All patients diagnosed with RA through the CIE-10 system during 2015 were included. Demographic and clinical data was collected and analyzed. Data analysis was performed with R v3.0.1 software. Results: During 2015, there were 27,398 ambulatory consults in IPS‘s rheumatology service, of which 655 were classified as a new diagnosis of RA in the CIE-10 system. Frequency of RA was calculated at 0.02. Mean age at diagnosis was 53.1 +/- 15.7 years and 82.7 % of patients were female. Twenty two percent of diagnosis were made in the months of September and October. Methotrexate, leflunomide and hydroxychloroquine were prescribed to 34.2 %, 16.2 % and 22.3 % of patients respectively. Glucocorticoids and non-steroidal anti inflammatories (NSAIDS) were prescribed to 37.1 % and 49.5 % of patients respectively. Discussion: This is the first study to describe the frequency of RA in a paraguayan population. During 2015, we found an RA incidence of 2.39 %, with most cases being diagnosed between September and October. Clinical characteristics of this population were similar to those previously described in the literature
